They also argued that it will help the Nation with sugar trade and other things. Simply putting it, they wanted to make colonies and expand. |

When being held in captivity under Legree a hard master he still works dilligently and Tom was too nice to be an overseer, he couldn't beat other slaves and this angered legree.
One day emmeline and cassy escape and tom will not disclose their location even though he knows, legree severely beats him causing his death a few days later.
