Double-crested Cormorant:

Long neck, >crow, all black, yellow goular pouch (like pelican), beak is slim and long with hook on end, green eyes

 Dive for fish - heavy and sit low in the water (can really only see head), don't have water-proofing on feathers (get waterlogged, have to dry out), fly in "V" formation (like geese)

American Coot:

Black body, pointy white beak, chunky, white undertail, white forhead patch, rail, smaller than most ducks

Call: sounds like an old man rubbing his finger on a window. Crazy old man!

American Bittern:

Colored in brown, tan, and white stripes, well camoflauged, size of Great Heron, mottled brown, stand with neck straight & beak pointing up, brown verticle bars on belly & neck, eyes can still see forward when looking up

 Mating Call: sounds like clock underwater, carries far

Least Bittern:

Tinest Egret or Heron (smaller than Crow), dark grey cap and back, rufious neck inbetween cap & back, light buffy on front, long bill

In flight: have very bright wing patch on inner-wing (contrast with outter black wing), hang around water

Great Blue Heron:

Most common & largest Heron (~Sandhill Crane), S-shaped neck, blue in color, massive beak with yellow color, white neck with black streaks, ornate feathers on head in breeding season, thick black stripe behind eye, hairy feathers on chest and back, nest in colonies

Call: a deep, horse croak: a frog getting stepped on

Great Egret:

Same size as Blue Heron, all white, bright yellow bill, slender & long neck, black legs & feet, flies with neck pulled back in an "S"

Snowy Egret:

Smaller but shaped similar to Great Egret, small & slender black bill with yellow base, black legs with yellow feet, hairy feathers in back of head (breeding plumage)

Green Heron:

Like least bittern, top & back are black, side of neck is purple, small and stocky, yellow legs, long bill, neck shorter than most herons

Black-crowned Night-Heron:

 Back of neck and top of head dark grey, stocky neck, white belly, black bill with white shield at base, yellow feet, red eyes, white breeding plumage stripe on side of back

Gray Partridge:

Smaller than pheasant (bigger than Quail). Brown colored, neck is grey, head is rufious, outter tail heathers are rusty, back side is mottled brown

M: dark patch on belly

F: white belly, more contrasty head

Ruffed Grouse:

Forest bird, slight crest, black ruffs on sides of neck, display with tail - half circle with broad dark subterminal band, grey and red color morph

Call: male drums with wings, makes soft thumping noise that gets faster

Northern Bobwhite:

Live in grasslands, mottled grey and brown on back, rufious flanks, mottled white and brown breast and belly, neck is not grey, short tails

M: white throat, white eyebrow stripe

F: yellow throat, yellow eyebrow stripe

Call: "bob...bob-whiite" with end going up in pitch

Virginia Rail:

Robin-sized, grey face, red beak that curves down (decurved), underside plain brown, legs reddish, black bars on flanks, back is mottled brown

Call: two quick, high-pitched "kid-dik, kid-dik, kid-dik"  

Sora:

Green feet and legs, short thick yellow bill, black interior to eye, grey cheek, brown cap with white band underneath (above eye), black streak on throat and neck, mottled brown back

Call: "sor-AH, sor-AH" goes higher pitched on end, followed by descending whinney

Common Moorhen:

Shaped like Coot but smaller, reddish beak with yellow tip, red forhead shield, white undertail coverts, contrasty tail-end, black head, dark body

Sandhill Crane:

~Great Blue Heron but with more erect posture, feed on seeds & grass, plain grey/rusty brownred eyebrow shield, tail feathers ruffle up like circle, flies with straight neck & legs extending past tail color (depending on time of year)

Whooping Crane:

Tallest bird in NA, long neck/legs, white body, black wingtips, red forhead/cheek, rump tuft of feathers

Wild Turkey:

 Large, dark, large fan-shaped tail, bare head & neck, short down-curved bill

Call: sad, wings make high-pitched sound when taking off

Ring-necked Pheasant:
