Term
Organic peroxides: contain a O-O bond and contain a peroxide functional group ROOR'. It is explosive and flammable. These chemicals must be dated at delivery and opening. They become more dangerous as they age. Oxidizing Chemicals: spontaneously evolve O at room temperature or with slight heating and promote combustion. They are explosive. Particular caution is required when workigng with storing strong oxidizers because they can react with combustibles at room temperature. Pyrophoric substances: these are air or water reactive. They ignite spontanously in air at room temperature, either by oxidation or by reaction with atmospheric moisture. These can be water reactive too. Additional training is required.
Definition

Please give a brief description of each of these types of chemicals and state their primary hazards. Organic peroxides Oxidizing chemicals Pyrophoric substances

Term
Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP)
Standard operating procedures (SOP)
Definition
If you will use a new chemical, where will you find information on how to safely handle it? Please name two sources of information.
Term
pyrophoric
Definition

Which of these classes of chemicals requires specialized training and may require handling under Nitrogen or Argon gas or working in a glove box?

Term
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
Definition
Hazards, signs and symptoms of exposure, toxicity, health effects, emergency procedures, reactivity characteristics, storage requirements, handling precautions, disposal requirements, and recommended protective equipment all can be found on the ______________
Term
chemical hygiene plan (www.ehs.com)
Definition
Because a particular type of glove does not protect against all types of hazardous materials, you look at the the glove selection guide. Where would you find this guide?
Term
remove them to fresh air and keep them warm. If breathign has stopped, call 911 and then begin CPR (only if trained)
Definition
If you find a co-worker who has inhaled a toxic chemical, what do you do?
Term
Less than a cup, about 1 cup of liquid.
Definition
About how big is an "incidental" spill?
Term
Yes
Definition

Looking at Permissible Exposure Limits for Chemical Contaminants found at http://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/5155table_ac1.html Can methanol be absorbed through the skin?

Yes

No

Term

carcinogen

Definition

Unpolymerized Acrylamide is used to make gels for protein and DNA electrophoresis and is categorized as a Particularly Hazardous Substance. Using the SOP on file at http://www.ehs.uci.edu/programs/sop_library/#chemsop what types of hazard does it pose? Choose all that apply.

Term
False
Definition

If you have an incidental spill of acrylamide powder, you can sweep it up and throw it in the trash

True

False

Term
acrylamide - pretty much any of them, rubber, neoprene, nitrite, pvc, viton, butol
Phenol - rubber, neoprene, viton, NOT nitrite
Formaldehyde - Nitrite, neoprene, rubber
Definition
To answer the following questions use the Glove Selection Tool at http://www.ehs.uci.edu/programs/ih/Universalchp/chp.html What type of gloves are appropriate to use with: Acrylamide? Phenol? Formaldehyde?
Term
Definition
Paraformaldehyde is used to fix cells and tissues for immunohistochemistry, select all of its health hazards
Term
Fume hood or local exhaust ventilation. Shower and eyewash. Must wear PPE: respiratory, skin and eye protection. Chemical safety goggles, Nitrite, neoprene, natural rubber, gloves (or PVC)
Definition
What specific types of engineering controls must you use with paraformaldehyde? What personal protective equipment must you wear?
Term
Calcium Gluconate
Definition
Hydrofluoric Acid is a VERY corrosive compound that can cause severe burns, fever, cough, dyspnea, cyanosis, pulmonary edema, blood spitting. It has a latency period up to 2 days for effects to appear. All Hydrofluoric Acid activities must be carried out in an exhausted acid cabinet with nearby emergency shower and eyewash. If you get hydroflouric acid on your skin, what antidote must you use?
Term
it is a mutagen and moderate toxin
Definition
Ethidium Bromide (EB) is used to visualize DNA and RNA in agarose gels using UV light. What are the two key hazards associated with Ethidium Bromide?
Term
Gels: place in sealed bag/container with an EH+S hazardous waste label.
dispose through EH+S as a hazardous waste
three alternatives:
1) EHS
2) Extraction/absorption
3)chemical degradation
Definition
Please refer to this website: http://www.ehs.uci.edu/programs/enviro/ethidium.pdf When you finish running your DNA gel containing Ethidium Bromide, how do you dispose of the gel? What three alternatives do you have for discarding your Ethidium Bromide buffer?
Term
Remove contaminated clothing, wash skin thoroughly with soup and copious amounts of water.
Flush eyes for 15 minutes.
Seek fresh air.
Seek medical attention
Definition
Phenol is routinely used to extract nucleic acids from cell lysates or protein solutions. This is a VERY nasty compound that can cause severe burns and is readily absorbed through the skin. If you have extensive skin exposure, coma and death can occur. If you spill phenol on yourself what should you do?
Term
phenol
Definition
For which of these compounds would nitrile gloves not provide sufficient protection so you would need a different type of material such as rubber, neoprene or viton?

Term
Shields; eye and face
Definition
Use ______ when working with reactive mixtures, but also wear both _____ and _____ protection too
Term

Definition
When you place hazardous materials into a container, you must obtain labels from www.ehs.uci.edu and include this specific information. Select all that apply.(0/1 points - all or nothing)
