Term
Who was the scientist who proposed the theory of evolution?
Definition
Charles Darwin
Term
What is a fossil?
Definition
Preserved remains of ancient organisms
Term
What is natural variation?
Definition
Differences among individuals of a species
Term
What is natural selection?
Definition
"Survival of the Fittest"
Term
What is Artificial selection?
Definition
Selection by humans for breeding of useful traits from the natural variation among different organisms.
(Humans pick animals with the 'best' traits & breed them)
Term
What does "Survival of the Fittest" mean?
Definition
Only the strongest, fittest, organisms will live on and reproduce.
Term
Darwin's Theory suggests that...
Definition
1. Individual organisms in nature differ from one another. Some of this variation is inheirited.

2.Organisms in nature produce more offspring than can survive, and many of those that survive do not reproduce.

3.Because more organisms are produced than can survive, members of each species must compete for limited resources.

4. Because each organism is unique, each has different advantages/disadvantages in the struggle of existence.
5.Individuals best suited to their environment survive and reproduce most successfully. The characteristics that make them best suited to their environment are passed on to offspring. individuals whose characteristics are not as good for their environment die/leave fewer offspring.

6.Species change over time. Over long periods, natural selection causes changes in the characteristics of a species (size,form..) New species arise, others disappear.

7.Species alive today have descended with modifications from species that lived in the past.

8.All organisms on Earth are united into a single tree of life by common descent.
Term
What is a mutation?
Definition
A change in DNA Sequence that affects genetic information.
Term
The Geologic Time Scale is a record of...
Definition
Evolutionary time
Term
The first organisms were...
Definition
today's anaerobic descendants
Term
Ursus arctos and Ursus maritimus belong to the same ___ but they do not belong to the same ____.
Definition
Genus
Species
Species are a smaller/more specific category under Genuses.
(Page 449)
Term
What are the important characteristics of the
fish? amphibians? reptiles? birds? mammals?
Definition
Fish: Aquatic vertebrates that have paired fins, scales, & gills.
Reptiles: Vertebrate that has dry, scaly skin, lungs, terrestrial eggs with several membranes.
Amphibians: Vertebrate that generally lives in water as larva and on land as an adult, breathes with lungs (in adulthood), has moist skin, lacks scales & claws.
Birds: Reptilelike animals that maintain a constant body temp. They have outer layer of feathers, two legs covered in scales, and front limbs modified into wings.
Mammals:Have hair, can nourish young with milk, breathe air, have 4 chambered hearts, and are endotherms (generate body heat internally)
Term
What do all living organisms have in common?
Definition
Living Things:
-Are made up of units called Cells.
-Reproduce
-Are based on a universal genetic code
-Grow&Develop
-Obtain & Use materials and energy
-Respond to their environment
-Maintain a stable internal environment
-Change, as a GROUP, over time
Term
Is extinction of species common?
