Term
What is behavioral variability?
Definition
We are all different in many different ways.
Across situations: People act differently in different situations. (ex. On sunny days vs. cloudy days)
Among individuals: (ex. at a party some people are talkative, whereas others are quiet and shy.)
Over time: People grow and change over time. (ex. a baby learns to walk, a girl becomes interested in boys.)
Term
What is the connection between behavioral variability and the research process?
Definition
All research questions are addressing behavioral variability.
Allows for the results to not have competing explanations, and allows for researchers to not have systematic error. Allows us to measure differences reliably.
Statistics are used to summarize and account for behavioral variability.
Term
What does the mean tell you about the scores?
Definition
It's an average, it reveals the middle or medium point of the group.
This is how MOST of the people do.
Term
What does the variance tell us?
Definition
How big are the differences in the group.
Term
What does the variance tell us about the mean?
Definition
It tells us the representative value of the scores. Whether the mean is representative or not.
High variance reveals that the mean isn't very accurate.
