Term
Describe a situation in which you were able to use persuasion to successfully convince someone to see things your way.
Definition

During the time I was in college while I was president in my business fraternity, we were trying to get CEO Tim Augustine of Atwell group to come speak to the University of Kansas, but needed to raise 3,500 in order for that to happen.

So I decided I would write a proposal to Coca Cola in hopes of persuading them to donate money in order to fund part of all of this event we planned to hold. After writing my proposal to Coca Cola, I presented it in front of a pannel of 10 board members explaining why this would be beneficial to the University as a whole, why the topic would interest ALL students (not just business ones), and the credientials of the speaker himself that he was a credible source.

After about a week of waiting to hear back, I recieved an email that Coca Cola approved to donate one thousand dollars in funds in order to bring us closer to our goal of 3,500 so that we could bring speaker Tim Augustine to The University of Kansas.

Term
Describe a time when you were faced with a stressful situation that demonstrated your coping skills.
Definition

During my senior year of college I was taking 18 hours, working a part job and was upholding a new standard as president of our business fraternity which put a lot of responsibility on my shoulders. We were almost half way through the year and among the many things I had going on, I knew that this year our initiation ceremony had to be memorized. As a small side note: the president always has the biggest part in initiation which is about 5 pages long in total.

So by this point, I had been growing as a leader throughout the semester, learned how to delegate work and not try to accomplish it all myself. I was able to call upon members of the chapter for various tasks like: asking someone to bring a birthday cake to celebrate our fraternity birthday for the following meeting, as well as organize someone to bring supplies such as colorful paper, glitter, markers and such so that we could make and send cards to the mothers of the local nursing home for mothers day.

By learning how to delegate work out to members, I was able to focus on my main task which was to prepare for initiation as well as fit work and school into my life without feeling overwhelmed. I also learned that calling upon other chapter members gave them a sense of belonging, that they were very much a part of the success of the chapter which in turn made them want to continually be more involved and later on run for an office.

Term
Give me an example of a time when you set a goal and were able to meet or achieve it
Definition

When I was actually Vice-President I made it my personal goal to turn around and redifine our recruitment process because our chapter was at about 20 members and no one really knew who we were.

I began to have people from our fraternity speak in all of the business classes offered, update their facebooks about our meet the chapter event which was a popular restaurant in town in their private room, chalk on campus and post fliers on campus which I designed for this event.

The first day of our meet the chapter event we had more than a full house, 40 people showed up and the second day 50 people showed up! After filtering through the candidates we initiated the largest pledge chapter we had in years.

Back when I worked at a new bar in my college town, lawrence, kansas they had their own specific way of dealing with the cash drawer (there was one) and dealing with the money at the end of the night.

Since I had experience in several corporate industries and also learned how money is dealt with correctly and incorrectly in school- the new bar which I began to work for did not fall in the category of correct money handling. We did not have 2 drawers, one for the day bartender and one for the night bartender, but we had one drawer for all day.

Considering all the things that went wrong and opportunity for others to steal- I suggested a new way to deal with the cash drawer and how we count the money so that more people were held responsible at the end of the night if there was any money missing

Term
Please discuss an important written document you were required to complete.

At the begining of every semester the president is required to submit a Fraternity strategic plan which included events, speakers, community service, and our overall plan for the semester. Well I gave each officer a timeline to turn in their events they had planned for the semester. Before the first day of school I had all of the officers meet so that we could all hear what each one had planned and know what was going on for the semester.

When done correctly this strategic plan is really the outline for the semester and helps the chapter fly through the semester flawlessly. It was my plan to have the strategic plan written out in detail and not thrown together which in turn would cut down on chapter meeting times. By the time I submitted our plan to central office and held the first meeting, I think the chapter was impressed and thankful we didn't have a 2 hour meeting.

Term
Tell me about a time when you had to go above and beyond the call of duty in order to get a job done.
Definition

When I worked at Boston Financial my boss asked me if I would like to do a special project since I knew how to operate excel. I was enthusiastic about accpeting a new project and gladly accepted his challenge.

I guess I didn't have to go above and beyond, but when I accepted the project to make a new workflow chart for 401k processing, I couldnt imagine giving less than 110%. So I used everything I learned in my IST 301 college class and built a workflow chart that was not only appeal to the eye, but easy to read and understand.

About a week later, my boss came up to my desk and thanked me for making such a nice workflow chart and told me it that upper management commented on it and they were more than impressed.

Term
Tell me about a time when you had too many things to do and you were required to prioritize your tasks.
Definition

We will take for example when I joined deltasig that we were not only about to be shut down and unaccredited, but our chapter had been doing so many fraternity processes wrong already, I didn't know where to begin.

I decided that I would make a meeting with our regional vice president to learn the correct version of chapter operations. After meeting with him for 4 hours I discovered we had alot to cover and couldnt do it all in one semester. So I took the "eating an elephant approach." We couldnt accomplish the big picture all at once so I made small semester goals to ultimately get us running on the right track. I started with what was most important and would put us in good standing with central office and then worked my way down to what the fraternity needed as a whole to grow.
