Term
How many ports can be bundled together to make a single etherchannel?
Definition
Catalyst switches allow up to 8 ports to be bundled together.
Term
At what layer can etherchannel configurations be used?
Definition
Etherchannel can be configured at either L2 or L3
Term
What are the 2 manangement protocols that can be used with EtherChannel?
Definition
Catalyst switches support either Port Aggregation Protocol (PAgP) or Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP)
Term
What is the default channel protocol and its mode of operation in Cisco switches?
Definition
The default channel protocol in Cisco switches is PAgP, and the default mode is auto
Term
What are the different modes that PAgP can operate in?
Definition
- On - Forces the ports to form an etherchannel without the use of PAgP.

- Off - Prevents the ports from forming an etherchannel

- Auto -  Places the port in a passive negotiating state and forms an etherchannel if the port receives PAgP packets.

- Desirable - Places the port into a negotiating state to form an Etherchannel, using PAgP.
Term
What are the 2 options that can be used when an etherchannel mode is set to either auto or desirable?
Definition
- Silent - The default keyword used with auto and desirable mode to indicate that the switch does not expect PAgP frames.

- Non-silent - Keyword used to indicate that the switch expects PAgP frames from the partner device.
Term
What is the recommended etherchannel mode on Cisco switches?
Definition
The Cisco recommendation for an etherchannel mode is the desirable mode, because it provides additional stability in the case of a misconfiguration or hardware or software failure
Term
What modes are compatible with each other with regards to using PAgP with etherchannel?
Definition
- On mode is only compatible with another interface in on mode

- Auto mode is only compatible with desirable mode

- Desirable mode is compatible with either auto mode or desirable mode.
Term
What are the different operational modes that LACP can run in?
Definition
- On - Forces the ports to form an etherchannel without LACP.

- Off - Prevents the ports form forming an Etherchannel

- Passive - Places the port into a passive negotiaing state and forms an etherchannel if the port receives LACP packets

- Active - Places the port into an active LACP negotiating state where the port initiates to form an etherchannel.
Term
Describe the system priority parameter used with LACP
Definition
LACP requires that each link partner has a system priority, which is determines automatically by the switch or through manual configuration. The switch uses the MAC address and the system priority for form the sytem ID used during negotiation with other systems.
Term
Describe the port priority patameter used with LACP.
Definition
LACP requires that each port has a port priority, which is determined automatically by the switch or through manual configuraiton. The port priority and the port number for the port ID. The switch uses the port priority to decide which ports to put in standby mode when a hardware limitation prevents all compatible ports from aggregating.
Term
Describe the administrative key parameter when configuring LACP
Definition
LACP requires each port involved in a channel have a key value, which is determined automatically or configured manually. The administrative key defines the ability of a port to aggregate with other ports.
Term
When using LACP, what happens to the ports that cannot be actively included in the channel?
Definition
LACP places these ports in hot standby mode, where it uses them only if one of the active ports fail.
Term
What must you keep in mind in regards to speed and duplex when configuring an etherchannel?
Definition
All ports in an etherchannel must have the same speed and duplex mode. LACP requires that the ports operate only in full-duplex mode.
Term
How many different etherchannels can a single port belong to?
Definition
A port cannot belong to more than one channel group at the same time.
Term
Describe the requirements that an Etherchannel must have in regards to VLAN configurations.
Definition
All ports in an Etherchannel must be configured to be in the same access VLAN configuration or be configured as VLAN trunks with the same allowable VLAN list and the same native VLAN. All ports also require the same VLAN cost configuration.
Term
How is an etherchannel configured when a port is also configured as a switched port analyzer (SPAN) destination port?
Definition
An etherchannel does not form if one of the ports is configured as a SPAN destination port.
Term
What command is used to create a new etherchannel port?
Definition
channel-group group_number mode mode_type
Term
What command determines the etherchannel protocol on a specific port?
Definition

channel-protocol [lacp | pagp]

Term
What command assigns a specific port to an Etherchannel and sets its mode?
Definition
channel-group channel_number mode mode_type
Term
What command displays information about a specific etherchannel?
Definition
show etherchannel channel-number summary
Term
What can be used as the deciding factor to which egress port of the etherchannel to tranmit the frame when load balancing?
Definition
Etherchannel load balancing can use MAC addresses, IP addresses, or L4 port numbers -source, destination, or both- as the determining factor for deciding which egress port of the etherchannel to transmit the frame.
Term
What command sets the load balancing operation on an IOS or CatOS switch?
Definition
IOS : port-channel load-balance {src-mac | dst-mac | src-dst-mac | src-ip | dst-ip | src-dst-ip | src-port | dst-port | src-dst-port}

CatOS: set port channel all distribution {ip | mac | session} [source | destination | both]
