ADOPTION

When one or two people legally take care of a child that they did not give birth to or parent biologically.  Parents who are not able to have their own children sometimes choose to adopt a child.  People can also adopt animals.

Adult

A grown-up or a person who is fully grown and mature.

Appointment

An agreement to meet with the doctor. Pregnant mommies and babies have frequent doctor’s appointments.

Babble

Babbling is when an infant makes sounds but does not produce recognizable words.

Baby

A very young child or animal.

Bassinet

A small bed for a baby that looks like a basket and usually has a hood or cover on one end.

Bib

Babies wear bibs around their neck to protect them from spilled food or drool.

Big

Not small.  Another word for large or huge.

Baby Bottle

A bottle that has a nipple to allow babies to drink milk and other beverages.

Born

When a mother gives birth to a baby, the baby is born.

Calf

A calf is a baby cow, elephant, moose, or whale.

Care

To provide help, protection, or supervision to a person, especially a baby or child.

Car Seat

A seat in a car that is secured tightly so keep the baby safe while riding it.

Change

To make or become different.  Babies change in size, abilities, etc. They also need to have their clothes and diapers changed often, which means to put a new or different set of clothes or diaper on.

Child

A human baby or infant.

Clothing

Things that you wear.  Baby clothing can be a onesie, booties, leggings, etc.

 Coo

To coo is to make the low soft cry of a dove or pigeon. Babies often make this sound.

Cradle

An infant or baby’s place bed or crib is also called a cradle.  A cradle is normally mounted on rockers.

Cradle

When you cradle a baby you hold it gently and protectively.

Crawl

Moving on your hands and knees while keeping your body low to the ground.  Babies normally crawl before they learn how to walk.

Crib

Where a baby sleeps.  It has sides high enough so that the baby can not roll off or crawl out of.

Cry

A shout or scream expressing emotion. Babies are unable to talk at first, so they cry when they are hungry, have a wet diaper, etc.

Diaper

Material that is worn around the baby so absorb pee and poop.

Duckling

A baby duck.  A duckling hatches from an egg that is laid by a duck.

Egg

A round object which is laid by various animals such as ducks and snakes.  Baby animals hatch out of these eggs.

Gentle

Being soft and easy when touching something that can easily break or be hurt.  You must be gentle when you touch, hold, change, etc. a baby or animal.

Grow

To get bigger. Babies grow into children and children into teenagers, and teenagers into adults.

Habitat

The home or environment of a person or animal.

Hatch

When an egg opens and produces a baby animal. 

Height

How tall someone or something is.  Height is measured by a ruler.

Hospital

A place to care for sick or injured people as well as where mothers go to give birth to babies.

Infant

An infant if a very young child or baby.

Lullaby

A soft and soothing song typically sung to babies or to help children fall asleep.

Newborn

A baby that was just recently born.  A mother gives birth to a newborn.

Nursery

A nursery is a room in a house where young children sleep.

Nurture

To care for something and help it grow.

Parent

A father or a mother.

Pediatrician

A doctor for babies and children.

Premature

A baby that was born early. These babies often have to be placed in a machine called an incubator so that it may help them grow.

Rattle

A baby item filled with small pellets that makes a sound.

Roll

Turning over. Babies can learn how to roll their body over.

Size

How big or mall a person, animal, or item is.

Sleep

People and animals do this every night. It is where your body and mind is at rest. Babies need a lot of sleep.

Small

Less than normal size. The opposite of big.

Stroller

A chair on wheels which a baby or small child can sit in and be pushed around.

Swaddle

To wrap up. Babies are often swaddled in blankets.

Tadpole

A young frog that breathes and lives in water. They hatch from small eggs lad in the water by the mother.

Talk

To speak in order to communicate, give information, and express ideas and/or feelings.  Babies need to learn language and how to talk.

Tiny

Another word for small.

Toddler

A toddler is a young child who is just beginning to walk.

Veterinarian

A doctor that cares for animals.

Walk

Using your feet to move from one place to another. Babies and baby animals need to learn how to walk.

Weight

How heavy a person, animal, or item is. Weight is measured with a scale.

Zoologist

Someone who studies animal life.
