Atropine Sulfate - description |
|
Definition
- potent parasympatholytic - inhibits actions of aCh @ postganglionic parasympathetic (primarily muscarinic) receptors
- small doses inhibit salivary and bronchial secretions
- moderate doses increase heart rate and dilate pupils
- large doses decrease GI motility, inhibit gastric acid secretion, and may block nicotinic receptor site at the autonomic ganglia and at the neuromuscular jxn
- blocked vagal effects --> increased HR, enhanced AV conduction, little / no inotropic effect
- emergency - primarily used to increase HR in life threatening, symptomatic bradycardia and to antagonize excess muscarinic receptor stimulation caused by organophosphate insecticides and chmical nerve agents (sarin, soman)
