Term
Nitrogen
Definition
A gas that makes up 78% of the atmosphere, necessary for living things to grow. We do not get it directly from the air, but by eating plants.
Term
Oxygen
Definition
A gas that makes up 21% of the air, used by plants and animals to produce energy in their bodies.
Term
Carbon Dioxide
Definition
A gas that makes up less than 1% of the atmosphere, used by green plants to make their food. It is a major greenhouse gas.
Term
Solid Particles
Definition
Objects such as dust, smoke, and pollen that affect the air quality.
Term
Water Vapor
Definition
A gas form of H2O (water) that determines how "wet" or humid the air is.
Term
Pressure
Definition
The pushing force of the atoms that make up the air on the earth by gravity. The more dense the air is, the more pressure there is.
Term
Barometer
Definition
An instrument that measures air pressure.
Term
Troposphere
Definition
The closest layer to the surface, where weather occurs and where we live. Tempreature drops as you rise.
Term
Stratosphere
Definition
The second closest layer to the surface of the Earth. Jet streams and the ozone layer are located here. Temperature goes up as you rise.
Term
Mesosphere
Definition
The third layer of the atmosphere, with meteors which normally burn up here. Temperature decreases as you rise.
Term
Thermosphere
Definition
The forth and last layer of the atmosphere, split into the Ionosphere and Exosphere. Temperature rises here but the atoms are to spread out to "feel" warm.
Term
Ionosphere
Definition
A part of the Thermosphere made up of charged particles called ions, used for radio communication because radio signals bounce off this layer. Auoras also occur here.
Term
Exosphere
Definition
The largest layer of the atmosphere, and the outer part of the thermosphere. Atoms here are extremely spread out. This layer is where all our satellites orbit.
Term

Wild Card #1

The atmosphere is divided into layers by-

A- distance

B- temperature changes

C- density

D- flavor

Definition

B (what is)-

divided by temperature changes

Term
Thermal Energy
Definition
The scientific name for heat energy
Term
Radiation
Definition

The transferring of heat through no substance and the vacuum of space.

Ex- energy from the sun comes to us this way!

Term
Conduction
Definition

Heat transferred by atoms that are touching, or solids. It cannot be carried through a liquid or a gas.

Ex- Walking barefooted on the sidewalk on a hot day!

Term
Convection
Definition
The transferring of heatthrough a liquid or a gas, carried from one place to another by convection currents.
Term

The Greenhouse Effect

Blank on flip side- infared radiation.

Definition
The action of atmospheric gases trapping heat close to the earth. Molecules of these gases absorb a type of heat called ________________ and starts to vibrate or heat up, transferring the heat to other atoms in the atmosphere.
Term
Winds
Definition
_____ is caused by the unequal heating of the earth. There are two types.
Term
Local Winds
Definition

Winds in a small area. There are two types-

Sea breezes and Land breezes. It is based on the quality of land being able to heat and cool faster than the sea.

Term
Sea Breeze
Definition
A local wind occuring in the day, coming from the sea. Cold air over the sea goes to the land and heats up, then rising. The air then cools and drops back to the sea.
Term
Land Breeze
Definition
A local wind occuring during the night. I starts with cool air over the land moving to the sea. The air is then heated and rises. The warm air then cools and returns to the land.
Term
Global Winds
Definition
A wind that blows across continents, affected by the Coriolis Effect. It blows in the same direction. There are three types of global winds- Polar Easterlies, Westerlies, and Trade Winds.
Term

Wild Card #3

Temperature depends on the _____________________.

Definition
(depends on the) angle of the sunlight.
Term
Polar Easterlies
Definition
Global winds from the poles to 60° latitude, formed from cold, sinking air.
Term
Westerlies
Definition
Global winds found from 30-60° latitude.
Term
Trade Winds
Definition
Winds that blow from 30° latitude to the equator. They were named from there use by early sailors.
Term
Jet Stream
Definition
A very fast (200-400 kmh) "conveyor belt" of air going completely around the earth in the stratosphere. It pulls weather in the US from west to east. They are not in a straight line.
Term
Anemometer
Definition
What measures a jet stream
Term

Convection Currents

You will be scored on how many topics you reach. (Don't look before)

You can get up to 5 points!

Definition

2 points- Warmer material is less dense, colder is more dense

2 points- Less dense material rises, more dense sinks

1 point- example (mantle, lava lamp, etc.)

bonus points(shh...)- incorporate penguins, flying pigs, hamburgers, or rainbows
