Sir Francis Bacon
Definition

Born in London. Attended Trinity College at age 12 and began to refute Aristotle's objectives.

 

Was interested in discovering unknown truths, serving England, and serving his church

 

His governmental career was a long one that was constantly put on hold for different reasons. While he was a good friend of Queen Elizabeth, she never felt he was qualified enough to hold a position of power.

 

It was only when King James took over that he was given the positions of solicitor-general, attorney-general, and eventually attorney general (against the will of most government officials)

Definition

Born in Germany

 

Father was an engraver and she inherited his artistic talent

 

She began painting insects and plants as a teenage

 

Moved to Nuremberg w/ husband

    began studying insects

        Studied the caterpillar lifecycle there

2nd Book was about the metamorphoses of butterflies

 

Traveled to Suriname to sketch local plants, but malaria caused her to return to Amsterdam.

    She brought species with her and wrote her 3rd book on suriname bugs

 

She is best remembered for her contributions in zoology

Definition

Born in England

    Father is lieutentant general

        Enrolls in 1st marine regiment at age of 13

Goes to Flanders to study warfare

    Appointed 2nd lieutentant of 1st marines

By 22 Wolfe is a lieutenant colonel

    Participates in the 7 year war

        Aggressively assists in the siege of Louisburg

Capturing Quebec.

    Battle of Plains of Abraham

        Under control of Wolfe, British prepare for siege 1759

        Wolfe is shot and dies on the battlefield (always fought with his troops)

 

His legacy was tremendous and was seen as a hero is England and Canada. His actions helped influence botht he Treaties of Spain and Paris. Youngest major general until 1937.

Simon Bolivar
Definition

Born in Caracas, New Grenada

    He was born into a relatively wealthy Creole family

        16 went to Europe for Education

            Introduced to Locke, Hobbes, Volatire, spurring desire to gain independence in SA

 

Independence fight begins in 1810 but armistice in 1812 leaves Spain in control

    writes a manifesto

        leads forces to retake Venezuela and by 1813 freed

 

Assumes politcal dictatorship

    People revolt and take back major Venezuelan cities and he flees to New Grenada and then Jamaica

 

Returns to Venezuela and begins launching independence campaigns again

    1821 Grand Columbia is created

        Named president

 

Then sets out to free Peru

    Succeeds and is named Dictator

        Northern part of Peru is named Bolivia

 

He is recognized by many as the main factor bringing indepence from Spanish but some consider his intentions marred due to his dictatorship intentions

Tecumseh
Definition

Born in the Ohio river valley as a member of the Shawnee river tribe. Name means shooting star

    Lands were constantly under attack by colonists trying to migrate west which let to his family settling down with his brother Tenkswatawa.

 

Brother was a self-proclaimed prophet who preached for Indians to stop purchasing American products because he believed that they were going to be the downfall on their society.

 

Him and his brother set out to create a unity amongst the tribes because Tecumseh felt this to be the only way the western migration of americans could be halted.

 

Tension rose between Tecumseh and Indiana governor William Henry Harrison over the Treaty of Fort Wayne. The treaty agreed to cede of 3 million acres of Indian land to America. Tecumseh was provided with false information that Harrison was not even officially affiliated with the government and that trickery was involved. In a famous conversation between the two, Tecumseh told harrison that if the Americans were to begin to survey the land, that he would reluctantly wage war. But if Harrison could repudiate the claims, he would be more then willing to ally with them.

Mary Jane Seacole
Definition

Born in Jamaica

    Mulatto daughter that had few rights

        Mother ran Blundell Hall which was a nursing home for soldiers

 

After her husband died, she had to financially support herself

    Used her nursing roots

        Mother taught her traditional Jamaican remedies

        Traveled to England and asked to be placed in Crimea as a nurse (nope)

 

She then traveled to Panema when there was cholera outbreak

    She treated patients from both sides of the fighting and poor for free(different from how Florence Nightengale acted)

 

Also performed autopsies to gain better understanding of disease

 

Wrote book the Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands

Henri Christophe
Definition

Born in probably Grenada, Henri was the son of a freeman but was brought to Saint-Domingue as a slave.

 

Said to have obtained freedom early in his life and before the Slave Uprising of 1791.

 

He worked as a mason, sailor, stable hand, waiter and billiard maker. Became skilled at dealing with white french planters through his managing of a hotel restaurant.

 

Distinguished himself in the uprising and became an officer for the Haitian revolution.

   Fought with Louverture helping to defeat, France, Spain, Britain, and finally french national troops.

 

After freedom was gained Christophe said to have been aware of a plot to assassinate Haitian leader Dessalines, but seeing an opportunity to gain power, he did not tell him. After that assassination Christophe was elected president.

 

Tried to reinforce a slave plantation system to increase production and used the corvee plantation work instead of taxes. He like trading with the British and English because they recognized Haiti while France and Spain did not. Cut a deal with Britain that Haiti would be no threat to their colonies if they warned them of French invasion,

        Prositution and alcoholism become prominent in her

People begin wondering the benefits of slavery
