This painting by Pablo Picasso, Les Demoiselles de Avignon, is regarded as the first of the cubist movement. (In the permanent collection in MoMA) The cubist movement was revolutionary, one that emphasized the true geometric forms. As you can see in this painting, the prostitutes of Avignon are portrayed in their bare geometric shapes. Picasso, interested in African art painted African-style masks on prostitues. This painting started the cubist movement which later captivated modern European artists in the early 20th century.

Velazquez himself is shown painting on the eisle on the left side of this painting. The mirror hung on the back wall shows what Velazquez is painting. The princess' parents Felipe IV and Mariana of Austria. This painting is characteristic of those ordered by the court as it shows the luxury and power of the monarchy.

This is the painting, Christina's World, by Andrew Wyeth, an American painter. (In MoMA) This painting, done in 1948 is of a girl who is paralyzed waist down and would crawl through the fields near Wyeth's home; this clearly inspired Wyeth. Wyeth was of the realist school, and this image does not give the detail in this painting justice. The detail is incredible with attention paid to each blade of grass. Truly breathtaking in terms of detail, if you ever are in MoMA it is on the 4th floor by the escalators.

The Scream painted by Edvard Munch, in 1893. Impressionist painting, as we can see from the use of colors and the coarse brush strokes. Notice the blend of colors he uses of the reds and blues. Up close this painting would look more blurry and hazy, but taking a step back the whole picture forms. This is typical of all impressionist paintings. Described by the artist this painting shows the "infinite scream passing through nature."

Young Girl with a Water Pitcher, painted in 1664 by Johannes Vermeer. This painting is of the Baroque era and showed every day life of the rising middle class in Holland. This painting as we can see shows signs of wealth that were growing in Holland at this time, we see these examples on the pitcher on the table, the jewelry case on the table, and the elaborate table cloth. The map mounted on the wall is thought to have symbolized the wealth and travel of the merchant class as the Netherlands were expanding their by-sea trade.
