-They are olbivious to the upset female relatives
-Perfect Example of Neo classical Style
-Depicted the scene in a shallow space.
-deployed his characters carefully, placing them across the scene and close to the foreground.

-Originally Portrayed 2 men mingling with women in a brothe; but by the time it was finished he eliminated the male sclients and simplified a schematic foreground still ..
-he fractured the figured as continuous volumes

-The Two women on the right were inspired by African sculpture.

-Oil on canvas
16 feet
-depiction of a historical event. The subject is a shipwreck that occured in 1816 off the coast of africa
-When the Medussa ship ran aground, 150 remaining passageners built a raft out of the ships wood.
-The raft driffted fro 12 days and the passengers dwindeled down to 15. Finally the ship was spotted and the surviviors were picked up
-Took 8 months to finish
-Sought to capture horror, choas and emotion of the tragedy.
-He Visited hospitals and morgues to look and talk with survivors
-He had a model of the ship produced in his studip
-he was a member of an Abolistionist group which gave him a chance to place Jean Charles a black soilder at the top of surviviors

-Jackson Pollock
-1950

Consists of rythmic drips, splatters and dribbles of paint.
-Pollock used sticks and brushes where he flung, poured, and dripped paint.
He used not only traditional oil paint, but house hold panints and sometimes cig butts
-Simply roled the canvas out on the ground of his studies
-Pollock created art that was both spontaneous and choreographed.
-lack of well defined compositional focus made him different from traditional easel art.
-`the source of my painting is the unconcious` pollock

The Slave Ship

-1840

-Oil on canvas
-Its subject is an 1783 incident reported in the book ` The History of the aboliation of the slave trade`Book was printed in 1839- This is probabaly what inspired turner.
-Incident involved the captian of the slave ship who relayed that his insurance would not reimburse slaves who have died, but only those lost at sea. The captian decided to throw the sick and dying slaves overboard.
-The Artists turned the sun into a encandescent coment amit the redish clouds
-The Slave ship moves into the distance, with the sea of bodies sinking to their death.
-It is difficult to notice the bodies until the viewever looks closely and sees the shackles attached t othe singing arms and legs.
The realitiy of color is at one with the realitiy of feeling.
-conveys emotional power through color.

-The Main living rooms are on the 2nd floor. He desinged the entire 2nd floor with patritions that can be closed to designed to be rooms, or open to be one complate room.
Railing, free-floating walls and long rectangular windows can be seen from the outside
-gives the effect that the cubis units are breaking apart right in from of the viewers eyes.
Makes the structure look like a 3-d projection
-attached to a row of old school homes.

Born in russia , but omved to munich in 1896.
Was one of the first artists to explore complete abstraction.

Kandinsky was a ture intellect-widealy read in philsophy, religion, history, and other arts.

May have been influence by scienctitists explortation of atomic structire- maybe have convinced him that material objects had no real substrance.

Kadinsky beleived artists must express their spirit and inner feels by using color, form, line and space. impied spatial relation ships

Kadinsky saw these abstracts as evolving bueplrints for a more enlightened society emparsizing spirituality.

- A seated, cross legged, naked womean envelopes the body of a child.
-The limp childs head is tipped far back, while the body is being tightly clutched by the mother.
-The mothers featued are mostly hidden by the childs body except one eye and a nose nestled into the skin.
-The mothers muscular leg forms the base from the viewers eye.
the shainf and lines drawn contribute to the othe drama of the pcuiture. the artists drew the mothers hair delicate to the same as the boys body.

-depicts the interior of a cage, with a half .... doorway in the in the centre of the background.
-5 customoers ist at tables along the walls on the left and rise side (drunks and prostituses)
A waiter stands on the right side of the pool table in a light coat.
-Use of vivid colors: (green ceiling) (Red walls) yellow floors and glowing gas lights.
-The paint is applied thickly with many of the lines leading toward the door in the back
-Vangogh often wrote to this brother, he stated:
``I tried to express the idea that a cafe is a place where one can ruin oneself. Go mad or commit a crime``

Two Fridas are sitting in adjacent chairs and and holding hands and staring at the viewers
-The two are sitting on a green ... bench on a brownish smooth floor. Behind them is a painted blue sky.
One Frida is wearing a natiure indian costime and blouse. The blouse is blue with gold trim and the skirt is green with a with a white train.
-The Other fridas is dressed in a white european long , style dress with flower embroidery on the bottom.
-The two Fridas are connected to each other by a shared circulatory system w their hear exposed.
The frida in the white dress has snipped the blood flow to her heart.
The pool of blood on her lap repsresents her inablitiy to have children

In 1981 a jury of architects, sculptors and landscapers selected lins idea for the memorial.
-Found at the consition gardens in washington D.C
-The public did not like it, the black walls and the receding from the ground was too morbid and remsembled a grave.
-Minimalist- does not dictate repsones and encourages personal exploration
-Act of cutting open the eart and posishling the earth`s surface

-Names of vietnam members allign the black wall.

-The comission of fine arts added a 2nd memorial to settle the controversy.
-The polished granile allows the person viewing names to see their reflection.

-To see this, people must only reflect on how details of an object look while driving on a highway.

-Mary had trained as apainter before moving to europe to study.
-She also had the respondsibility of caring for her aging parents and often could not attend the cafes as her male artist friends could.
-for these reasons Mary's subjects are mainly womean and children
-"The Bath" decpicts the relationship between a mother and child
-"Visual Solidarity of the mother and child contrasts with the flatness of the peper and ring.
-Borrowed inspiration from friend Degas and Japanese prints.

-He Concluded that primary colors and values are the purest colars and therefor are the perfect tools to create something of harmony.

-The husbands hands are placved deep in his moneyless pockets, while their dog sniffs his pocket at a women's lace cap sticking out of his pocket.
-A Steward, with his hand full of unpaid bills, raises his eyes and hand in dispair, the at the married couople.

Hopper created a realist vision of the post war but all simplified the shapes moving toward abstraction.

Hopper concetraed his scenes on contemporary American city and country life

-His paintings depict building streets and landscapes that are curiously muted and filled with empty spaces- depciting the nature of the depression era

-From the darkened streets outside a resturant, the viewer views the lighted inside through a large placed glass window. giving the inner space a feeling of safeness as well as a unvurnerable.

-His paintings suggests the loneliness of people.

-Some of the models were courbert sisters and friends

-the colors contrast richely and intensly

-shows the importance and effect color can have.

-Initally was gree, painted over blue then finally matisse was happy with the harmony of red.
