Context: similar in style to Titian, this could be because Rubens spent 8 years in Italy learning and copying Renaissance style and techniques. It is a very busy picture with lots of bodies and scenes. Very muscalar bodied figures.

Context: creates drama and excitement by portraying the moments before a festival. The more of a body is shown, the more a person pays (the man with an arm over his face was probably blocked out for not paying). Was originally a scene during the day but the pigment has darkened with time giving it a night appearance. The young girl in the yellow dress can be seen as an allegorical figure. The painting has been slashed multiple times with a knife.

Context: Being stuck in Versailles gave the aristocrats lots of free time, took up role playing and arts. The forest represents sexuality and the aristocrats are coming from a sort of orgy that happens on in the magical forest. Depicts the aristocrats leaving society to have fun and now returning.

Context: The lady's lover is hiding in the bushes. She is being pushed by an older man who could be her father or her husband. The slipper is thrown for the lover to have as a momentum of his lady. The lady is flashing her lover by lifting her leg. The garden is overgrown. The girl's body makes a curving line that is mimicked by a tree branch in the background. The pastel color of her dress makes her stand out. There are statues of cupid around the garden.

Sent a messages to the people to forget their personal feelings and fight during the French Revolution. Three group of figures are aligned with the arches in the background. Clean brush strokes.

Context: Ship was headed from France to Africa with passangers and crew made up of aristocrats, the ship struck a coral reef and sunk, the captain fleed on the life boats leaving the rest of the passangers to drown. The aristocrats built a raft from pieces of the ship and float at sea for weeks. In the painting, the survivers are shown waving at a ship in the distance to rescue them. A dark colored man is shown being lifted by others which represents the unity of people. The author is also critizicing the unfairness of the advantages to the upperclasses. The author used body parts to model to finish the huge painting in record time.

Context: all classes of France are united to end oppression. Painting is to commemorate the July Revolution. Liberty is half nude because she is portrayed as half human and half unreal/allegorical. The man with no pants on is the artist showing off his knowledge of human anatomy.
