Literally means "the Friday-born Golden Stool." The Golden Stool was considered the "soul of the nation." The Asante people believed that on a Friday in 1701, it came out of the clouds to Osei Tutu (the 1st divine ruler of the Asante). It was considered a symbol of the kingdom's unity and vitality, and was so sacred that it was not allowed to touch the ground. No one except the Asantehene could sit in it. Osei Tutu granted permission to loyal cheifs to purchase new stools, making the stools highly visible symbols of political unity.
