Describe artistic qualities of the Woman from Willendorf. |
|
Definition
Her reproductive parts are emphasized. She seems to be lactating, has a protruding abdomen (either pregnant or postpartum), and pubic triangle is clear. Her face is obscure, either because unimportant feature to the artist or it is hidden by a vegetable cap (maybe indicating she is a deity). She has useless feet and arms. She is a sculpture in the round. She is probably a fertility object (either good luck charm or represents the mother goddess). |

She is a low relief sculpture. She has an obscure face (possible deity) and pronounced reproductive parts. Lactating breasts, protruding abdomen (pregnant or postpartum), huge thighs (good for child birthing), and note the pubic triangle is seen. The figures were all drawn by the same person (in profile) but at different times. May have been done by a priest doing timely rituals or as a coming of age task. Thought to be the first cave painting we have (surprising for the complexity of the images). If the rhinos are fighting (as it may appear) then this is the first action painting. |

The head is 180 of the direction that normal bison head would be facing- reason is likely because of spacial restrictions and trying to best show the bison head as a profile view. This weapon was probably decorated to show ownership, capture the animal spirit, and intimidate opponents. |
