• Academic family (not wealthy)
• BA in classics 
• Dug at various sights including korakou, troy, nestor's palace
• not looking for fame and glory, looking for knowledge
• believed in three important principles. 1)stratigraphy 2)pottery 3)record in situ(in place)
• discoverd form pottery that mainland and crete were two different cultures
• worked with Alan Wace
• dug at troy and thought that homeric troy was at level 7-8

• discovered that the walls shifted possibly due to an earth quake
• believed that homeric troy was at the level 7-8 when schliemann thought it was level 2
• at level 7a there were messy shacks packed along walls  
• this hsows they were in ahurry to rebuild...worried about the greeks possible

• Bay of Navarino
• did a field survey of the land, found shards of pottery near the bay
• dig began april 4th 1939
• knew he had a palace right away
• on first day, he found 600 linear B tablets
• discovered writing on the main land! literacy!
• destroyed by fire 
• there were no walls around it

• Had typical Megeron struture 
• Queens megaron

• Has not been desiphered
• this is because there were not enough found
• they were found in knossos
• linear a was later adapted into linear B
• found on crete but not on the mainland

• Michael Ventris desiphered linear B
• Alex Colvert had done a lot of work before michael ventris on desiphering linear B but unfortunatly died before her work was complete.  
• they were originally unbaked tablets, but were baked in a fire.
• found on knossos
• the records were only meant for one year
• they were accounts of palace store rooms
