Goals: Conquer, find gold, and spread Catholicism. Occupy South America, Southwest America, most populated South America, rest of American colonies mostly buffer colonies, and undeveloped. South America has large indigenous population.

Settled around Mississippi River, not many permanent settlements b/c of harsh terrain, enjoyed Louisiana and Mississippi as waterways, but no other land incentives to join colony. Also French Protestants not allowed to emigrate, only Catholic.

Focus: Furs, trade, converting Natives, also accepted Indian ways, married Native American women, very good relations with them.

Definition
In New Mexico, the Pueblos are being converted to Christianity and being exploited. Pope organizes a rebellion of Indians that drives the Spanish out of New Mexico, killing priests, burning churches, etc. The Spanish eventually regain New Mexico.
