2nd generation Quinolone

-Bactericidal/targets topoisomerase

In gram + targets Topo IV (inhibits decatenation)

In gram - targets Topo II (initiates negative supercoils)

Tx: Pseumonas, Enterotoxic E. Coli (travs diarrhea), UTI's and GI tract infxns

Anthrax, Legionella

*Don't take with meals and can get a build up of theophylline

^seizure risk with NSAIDs and theophylline

Oral Sulfonamide used for UTIs

-Reversibly inhibits DHPS (Bacteriostatic)

Contra: Pregnant women and infants (kernicterus, bilirubin displacement)

Definition

Combo therapy, inhibits two sequential steps in folate metabolism

Static alone, BUT together= cidal

Tx: Recurrent UTIs, GI (shigella, salmonella)

*Potent antifolate in humans, megaloblastic anemia
(use leucovorin)
