  1. Physical Anthropology- forensics, human evolution. primatology, DNA- Human genome project
  2. Archeology- the study of the archaic. - focus on the remains of past civilizations. Midden or trash heaps are one of the most famous/ key sources of archaeological research.
  3. Linguistic Anthropology- the study of human language/ communication.
  4. Cultural Anthropology- the study of human culture.

  • a kind of matrix in which we are evaluating our “relationships” to one another.

  2. is artificial
  3. is learned (enculturation= learning a culture)
  4. is dynamic (changes over time)- all cultures have history- no one lives exactly like their predcessors did- we all change to suit our own needs
  5. there is no natural or normal culture a person is born with- characteristics w/in a group= learned- a person has no set culture- the meanings given to symbols are not universally shared across cultures "culturally specific"

    • going and hanging out with a group of people fir many months/years to really understand what that group is about
    • refers to close long term interaction with another cultural/social group
