Why bipedalism? (5 theories) |
|
Definition
1. Carrying theory - ancestors forced to carry tools and food and they had to stand up to do so. 2. Postural hypotheses - feeding from bushes (standing), looking out over savannah (tall grass). 3. Mate provisioning - possibly monogamous, males left home to get food - they had to carry food back. PROBLEM: NOT MONOGAMOUS. 4. Thermoragulation - Standing up is less hot than quadrupedalism (surface are exposed to sun). 5. Energy efficiency - bipedalism more efficient than quadrupedalism, so it was a better choice for endurance walking between woodlands. Fits other theories. |
