Supposedly started in 2003, Anonymous as a group enacts forms of "hactivism", where they centralize on one goal and work in unison against that person or company. The group formed on imageboard sites like 4chan or 7chan and continue to use such sites as their base of operations. They are most commonly known to take down websites with "DDoS" or Distributed Denial of Service attacks. Though this is accomplished through multiple means, the most common way is for a group of different computers to log on to a single site over and over again until the resources for the server are completely consumed and it is forced to shut down. They have also been known to stage live protests throughout the world. The group is most commonly seen in public wearing the Guy Fawkes mask from "V for Vendetta". |

In February 2008, multiple protests were formed at various Scientology centers around the world. More than 8000 people are estimated to have converged on the churches, many wearing the Guy Fawkes mask. This was done as a part of Operation Reconnect, which was an additional protest against Scientology's disconnection policy, which states that a member of the church must cut all ties with any family or friends who are against the church in any way.
These protests are ongoing and take advantage of any Scientologist media events or events involving high profile members of the church. |

When the Australian government announced that they would start censoring any internet sites that contained p**nography. Specifically p**n that involved "women with small breasts and female e*********n" stating that it was to crack down on pedophilic imagery. (I understand the small boobs, but why the e*********ns? Are they under the impression the little girls do that?)
As we have seen, Anonymous are not fans of censorship in anyway. If you let one case through you leave yourself open to more. So in response to the announcement the group sent out the above statement. When their demands were not met, they proceeded to respond with a DDoS attack on different Australian government websites. Though the sites did go down for 2 days, the government claimed that they were not concerned and left the sites down until the attacks were over. |

While Anonymous might seem like they only go after governments and other entities that might be considered "good guys" in some people's eyes, they have made a bold move against a group that you would be hard pressed to find a sympathizer. At the end of October 2011 the hacktivist group took down a "darknet" that was providing services for pedophiles |

People were outraged and attempted to help Assange by donating money to the site. Unfortunately for them, major companies like Mastercard, Visa, PayPal, BankAmerican and even Amazon froze of donations due to political pressure.
In response to the denial, Anonymous started a coordinated DDoS attack that shut down both Mastercard and Visa. Before they could shut down PayPal, the company released all funds gathered for WikiLeaks, stating that they would no longer accept any further money for the company after that |

In 2010 the CEO of the company, Aaron Barr, claimed that he would be able to use different social media sites to gather needed information in tracking down hackers. He claimed in 2011 that he was able to infiltrate Anonymous and was able to get information on a list of suspected members.
Of course Anonymous was not happy about the claim and quickly retaliated by compromising the security on the HBGary Federal and HBGary Inc websites. They were able to not only get access to, and copy tens of thousands of files from the companies, but also were able to hack Barr's personal Twitter account. The group then posted thousands of personal emails and files online, exposing many corrupt acts made by the company. |

During the Tunisian revolution Anonymous helped the rebels by supplying them with information that was needed to help take down the government as well as helping them get around the censorship in place. They also committed over 9000 people to a DDoS attack that took down the top 5 government websites for much of the fight. This was one of the big turning points in the revolution. |

Anonymous consists largely of users from multiple imageboards and Internet forums. In addition, several wikis and Internet Relay Chat networks are maintained to overcome the limitations of traditional imageboards. These modes of communication are the means by which Anonymous protesters participating in Project Chanology communicate and organize upcoming protests. |

Anonymous was born on the influential internet messageboard 4chan, a forum popular with hackers and gamers, in 2003. The group's name is a nod to 4chan's early days, when any individuals who posted to its forums and chose not to identify themselves were automatically dubbed "Anonymous". But the ephemeral group, which picks up causes "whenever it feels like it", has now "gone beyond 4chan into something bigger", an active Anonymous member told the Guardian. |

Anonymous has no command structure. Members communicate using secure chat-rooms, the location of which constantly move to evade detection. The movement works through "organised chaos" where individuals post ideas and new targets to attack, and wait to see the response. Eventually popular ideas generate action. |
