Term
PSA
Definition

Field of anesthesia - Numbs the pulps of the maxillary first, second and third molars, and the buccal periodontium on the injected side. Sometimes the mesiobuccal root of the maxillary first molar will not recieve entire innervation or no innervation at all

Penetration site - the height of the mucobuccal fold, posterior to the zygomatic process of the maxilla & generally superior to the distobuccal root of the maxillary second molar

Landmarks - look for the height of the mucobuccal fold, posterior to the zygomatic process of the maxilla & generally superior to the distobuccal root of the maxillary second molar

Needle length - 25 or 27 gauge, 27 short guage is most commonly used

Angle of insertion - upward insertion at a 45 degree angle to the midsagittal plane, then advanced backward behind the posterior aspect of the maxilla

Penetration - 16 mm; can range from 10-16 mm

Amount of Anesthesia - 0.9 ml to 1.8 ml after negative aspiration

Term
MSA
Definition

Field of Anesthesia - pulps of maxillary 1st and 2nd premolars & their facial gingiva, periodontal ligament, & alveolar bone. Sometimes the mesiobuccal root of the 1st molar, and occasionally the cheek & upper lip may be affected

Penetration site - height of the mucobuccal fold over the maxillary 2nd premolar

Landmarks - mucobuccal fold next to the maxillary 2nd premolar

Needle Length - 27 or 25 gauge short needle

Angle of insertion - align the syringe barrel along the contour of the maxilla

Penetration - 5-8 mm

Amount of anesthetic used - 0.9 ml to 1.2 ml

Term
ASA
Definition

Field of Anesthesia - pulps of maxillary central incisors through the canine on the injected side & their facial periodontium, also the lip, cheek, and lower nose

Penetration site - at the height of the mucobuccal fold anterior to the canine eminence

Landmarks - the site is above the apical area of the canine at the height of the canine fossa

Needle length - 27, 25 or 30 gauge needle

Angle of insertion: -align the barrel of the syringe parallel to the long axis of the canine, following the contour of the maxilla

How much needle is inserted - 3-6 mm

Amount of anesthesia - 0.9 ml

Term
GP
Definition

Field of anesthesia - no teeth just palatal tissues of posterior teeth

Penetration site - in the palatal soft tissue slightly anterior to the greater palatine foramen, at the anterior border of the depression formed by the foramen

Landmarks - pterygopalatine fossa, pterygopalatine canal, greater palatine foramen and depression formed by the foramen

Needle length - 27 gauge short needle (most common) or 30 gauge short or x short needle.

Angle of insertion - perpendicular to the palatal bone of the foramen, with the syringe barrel near the lower lip

Penetration - 4-6 mm sometimes up to 10mm

Amount of anesthesia - 0.45 ml, injection is 0.4 ml over 30 seconds or approximately 1.8 ml over 2 minutes

Term
NP/PASA
Definition

Field of anesthesia – structures located in the anterior third of the palate

The penetration site for inserting your needle – just lateral to incisive papilla

Landmarks to help identify target – beneath incisive papilla, slightly into incisive foramen

What length of needle is recommended – 27 gauge short needle

Angle of insertion – approach at 45 degree angle bevel toward palate.

Penetration – 6- 10 mm

Recommended amount of anesthesia – 1.4-1.8 ml

Term
BUCCAL
Definition

Field of anesthesia – soft tissues buccal to molars

The penetration site for inserting your needle – mucous membrane distal and lateral to most posterior molar

Landmarks to help identify target – supraperiosteal, distal, and buccal to most posterior molar

What length of needle is recommended – short or long 25/27

Angle of insertion – syringe parallel to Occlusal plane lateral to teeth, bevel toward bone

Penetration – less then 4 mm, bevel under tissue, toward bone

Recommended amount of anesthesia – 0.2-0.3 ml

Term
IA
Definition

Field of anesthesia – all teeth in quadrant, all periodontium, buccal mucosa premolars to midline, floor of mouth, ½ tongue in quadrant

The penetration site for inserting your needle – mesial to interal oblique ridge, lateral to pterygomandibular raphe, at or above height of coronoid notch

Landmarks to help identify target – mesial surface of ramus, slightly superior to mandibular foramen

What length of needle is recommended – long 25/27 gauge

Angle of insertion – 2/3 to ¾ length of needle, until contact with bone, bevel toward bone

Penetration - 2/3 to ¾ length of needle, until contact with bone, bevel toward bone

Recommended amount of anesthesia – 1.5 – 1.8 ml

Term
Mental
Definition

Field of anesthesia – pulpal limited to tooth at site of infiltration and premolars to midline

The penetration site for inserting your needle – mucobuccal fold at or just anterior to mental foramen

Landmarks to help identify target – slightly superior to mental foramen

What length of needle is recommended – short 25/27 gague

Angle of insertion – approximately 20 degrees to long axis of premolars, bevel toward bone

Penetration – 5-6 mm

Recommended amount of anesthesia – 0.6 ml

Term
Mandibular Infiltration
Definition

Field of anesthesia – teeth and soft tissue at injection site

The penetration site for inserting your needle – mucobuccal fold buccal to tooth

Landmarks to help identify target – selected soft tissue, gingival or apex of tooth

What length of needle is recommended – extra-short or short 25/27/30 gauge

Angle of insertion – approximately 20 degree to long axis of tooth, directed toward apex of tooth, bevel toward bone

Penetration – 3-6 mm to apex

Recommended amount of anesthesia – 0.6 ml
