VITAMIN USE: oral preps can supplement a deficient diet, IV for pernicious anemia, postgastrectomy and small bowel resection, malabsorption syndromes Other: seen in meat, eggs, dairy products, absorption requires pancreatic proteases and gastric intrinsic factor, transported by transcobalamin in the plasma, stored in liver, can take years to get anemia Malabsorption may be due to lack of IF in autoimmunity, post-gastrectomy, congential, or small bowel abnormalities in IBD and post resection |
