Term
Gluteus Maximus
Definition
Proximal Attachment- Ilium Posterior to posterior gluteal line, to the dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx and sacrotuberous ligament.

Distal Attachment- 3/4th fibers end in the iliotibial tract to gerdy’s tubercle. 1/4th fibers insert on gluteal tuberosity of femur.

Action- Hip extension, Hip external rotation *Reverse Action=trunk extension

Innervation- Inferior Gluteal Nerve (L5-S2)
Term
Gluteus Medius
Definition
Proximal Attachment-External surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines

Distal Attachment- lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur

Action- Hip abduction, Hip internal rotation, Keeps pelvis level during ipsilateral single limb stance.

Innervation- Superior Gluteal Nerve (L5, S1)
Term
Gluteus Minimus
Definition
Proximal Attachment- External surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines.

Distal Attachment- anterior surface of greater troch of femur

Action- Hip abduction, Hip internal rotation, Keeps pelvis level during ipsilateral single limb stance.

Innervation- Superior Gluteal Nerve (L5, S1)
Term
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Definition
Proximal Attachment- ASIS and anterior part of iliac crest.

Distal Attachment- into iliotibial tract, attaching to gerdy’s tubercle on tibia

Action- Hip flexion, Assists in abduction and internal rotation, Helps keep pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing during single limb stance.

Innervation- Superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1)
Term
Piriformis
Definition
Proximal Attachment- Anterior surface of sacrum and sacrotuberous ligament

Distal Attachment-superior border of greater trochanter of femur.

Action- Externally rotate hip, Horizontal Abduction hip

Innervation- Nerve to piriformis (S1, S2)
Term
Obturator Internus
Definition
Proximal Attachment- Pelvic surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bones.

Distal Attachment- trochanteric fossa of femur

Action- Externally rotate hip, Horizontal Abduction hip

Innervation- Nerve to Obturator internus (L5, S1)
Term
Obturator Externus
Definition
Proximal Attachment- Margins of obturator foramen & obturator membrane.

Distal Attachment- trochanteric fossa of femur

Action- Hip external rotation, Stabilization of hip joint

Innervation- Obturator nerve (L3, L4)
Term
Superior Gemellus
Definition
Proximal Attachment- Ischial spine

Distal Attachment- trochanteric fossa of femur

Action- Externally rotate hip, Horizontal Abduction hip

Innervation- Nerve to Obturator internus (L5, S1)
Term
Inferior gemellus
Definition
Proximal Attachment- Ischial tuberosity

Distal Attachment- trochanteric fossa of femur

Action- Externally rotate hip, Horizontal Abduction hip

Innervation- Nerve to Quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
Term
Quadratus Femoris
Definition
Proximal Attachment- Lateral border of ischial tuberosity

Distal Attachment- Quadrate tubercle on intertrochanteric crest of femur

Action- Hip external rotation, Stabilization of joint.

Innervation- Nerve to Quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
Term
Iliofemoral Ligament
Definition
-Proximally attaches to the AIIS and acetabular rim

-Distally attaches to intertrocanteric line

-Fibers become more taught with EXTENSION.

*Y SHAPED. Anterior and Superior. Part of the joint capsule
Term
Pubofemoral Ligament
Definition
-Arises from obturator crest of pubic bone and passes laterally and inferiorly to join with fibrous layer of joint capsule

-Becomes taught with EXTENSION and ABDUCTION.

* Anterior and Inferior. Part of the joint capsule
Term
Ischiofemoral Ligament
Definition
-Arises from the ischial part of acetabular rim and spirals superiorlaterally to medial aspect of greater trochanter.

-Becomes taught with EXTENSION & INTERNAL ROTATION

*Posterior. Part of the joint capsule. Weakest of the three ligaments
Term
Ligament to Head of Femur
Definition
-Arises from two bands attached to either side of the acetabular notch and attaches to the fovea of the head

-Taught when thigh is partially FLEXED and ABDUCTED

* Artery to the head of the femur travels inside
Term
Transverse acetabular ligament
Definition
Continuation of acetabular labrum bridging the inferior notch
Term
Acetabular labrum
Definition
-Fibrocartilaginous rim attached to the margin of acetabulum

-Increases depth & articular area ~10%
Term
Pelvis on Femur Movements
Definition
1. Anterior Pelvic Tilt
2. Posterior Pelvic Tilt
3. Lateral tilt
4. Forward Rotation
5. Backward Rotation
Term
Femur on Pelvis Movements
Definition
1. Flexion/Extension
2. Abduction/Adduction
3. Internal/External Rotation
4. Horizontal Abduction/ Horizontal Adduction
Term
Nerves of the Gluteal Region
Definition
1. Sciatic Nerve (L4-S3) Not actually innervating muscles of gluteal region. Passes inferiorly to piriformis
2. Superior Gluteal Nerve (L4-S1)
3. Inferior Gluteal Nerve (L5-S2)
4. Posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh (S1-S3)
5. Pudendal nerve (S2-S4)
6. Nerve to obturator internus (L5-S2)
Term
Vessels in the Gluteal Region
Definition
1. Superior gluteal artery and vein
2. Inferior gluteal artery and vein
3. Internal pudendal artery and vein

*All Arteries are branches off internal iliac artery in pelvis
*Alll exit pelvis through greater sciatic foramen.
*Pudendal vessels then re-enter pelvis through lesser sciatic foramen
Term
