Unlike other disrhythmics in that it acts directly on all cardiac tissues.

Prolongs duration of the action potential and refractory period without significantly affecting the membrane potential.

Relaxes smooth muscles, decreases vascular resistance, and increases coronary blood flow.

Blocks effects of sympathetic stimulation.

Adult dose: 150(alive)-300(dead)mg IV over 10 minutes.

Ped dose: 5mg/kg IV/IO rapid bolus. Maximum dose 15 mg/kg.

GI: Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation,

Respiratory: Alveolitis, fever, dry cough, dyspnea, interstitial pulmonary fibrosis

Skin: Slate-blue pigmentation, photosensitivity, rash
