Salutary Neglect
Definition
British policy of avoiding strict enforcement of parliamentary laws meant to keep the American colonies obedient to Great Britain.
Since the imperial authority didn't assert the power that it had, the colonists were left to govern themselves. These essentially sovereign colonies soon became accustomed to the idea of self-control. The effects of such prolonged isolation eventually resulted in the emergence of a collective identity that considered itself separate from Great Britain.

transferred the power of trying election petitions from the House of Commons to the Judiciary.
All contested elections were to be considered by a committee of thirteen members selected by ballot.

The Townshend Acts
Definition
laws placed tax on common products imported into American Colonies i.e. lead, paper, paint, glass, and tea.
Not a direct tax, but a tax on imports.
Created 3 new admiralty courts to try Americans who ignored the laws.
Impetus behind Townshend Act-large debt by Great Britain during the French and Indian War,logic being that since Britain had spent so much blood defending the American Colonies, was only proper that they bear a large portion of the financial burden.

Definition
1774,
series of laws passed by British parliament in response to growing unrest in American colonies.
Boston - Boston tea party.
Enforcement of the Acts played a major role in the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War and the establishment of the First Continental Congress.
Included:
- Quartering Act: required that troops be housed not only in commercial and empty buildings but in occupied dwellings as well.

Quebec Act

After French defeat during Seven Years War, setting out procedures of governance in Quebec.
American Whigs, however, were alarmed by the Quebec Act as much as the Coercive Acts, and they labeled it one of the "Intolerable Acts". Their main complaints over the Quebec Act were the protections granted to the Indian territories and to the Catholic settlers in Ohio. These were viewed as attempts to halt expansion into the west and to strengthen a church that many opposed and resented.
