Dot Matrix

How many pins in a dot matrix print head?

Definition

Dot matrix print head contains 9-24 pins.

Term

What is the interval on continuous perforated paper?

Definition

Perforations are at 11 inch or 14 inch

Term

What are the connections for Dot Matrix printers?

Definition

Serial and Parellel. USB, IEEE 1394, and Infrared was not yet introduced at the time these printers were made.

Term

What are the additional slots used for on Dot Matrix printers?

Definition

Additional ports are available for adding font cards, Memory, and additional paper feeders.

Term

What are other types of Dot Matrix printers

Definition

Daisy wheel and Band printers

Daisy Wheel printers can only produce fonts that are on the wheel.

Band Printers have the letters, numbers, and symbols repeated multiple times around on a band.

Term

What are some of the Dot Matrix printing issues?

Definition

Print heads wear out.

Ribbon ink can clog the pins that make up print images.

Pins can bend

Electromagnet contained in the print head that regulates which pin to push forward can become damaged.

Ribbon issues-Poor print quality

Overheating-poor ventilation causes overheating.

Paper Jams-If paper is not straight the sides with perforation can rip off causing paper jams.

Printer drivers-Check drivers if there is no physical or connection problems.

Error Messages-Error messages are shown as blinking lights.

Memory-Most printers have no memory and rely on on the print jobs being stored. If the drive is filled this can result in lost jobs.

Configuration-There are no default settings but if font card or other additional features something on the printer or software to alert windows features are available.

Connection-verify cables are connected and the correct cables are being used. If printer has both serial and parellel make sure windows is accessing the correct port LPT or COM ports.

Print Quality-Check ribbon and replace if needed.

Term
What is preventative maintenance on Dot Matrix Printers
Definition

Use compressed air on printers internal components.

Use mild household cleaners on outside of printer.

Use rubbing alcohol on the rollers.

Term

Inkjet Printers

What is the nozzle size on Ink Jet printers?

Definition

Each nozzle is 50 to 60 microns in diameter.

Term

What is Thermal Technology and Piezoelectic Technology

Definition

Thermal Bubble heats the ink which vaporizes it, creating a bubble. The bubble petrudes out through the nozzel and sprays onto the paper.

Piezoelectric creates a bubble with Piezo Crystal behind each nozzle. A electric current behind each nozzle causes vibration. When it vibrates inward it releases ink. When it vibrates outward it pulls ink from cartridge.

Term
What are the 2 different Ink cartridges.
Definition

Black cartridge-cartdridge with black ink.

Color cartdrige-Has compartments for Yellow, cyan, and magenta (CYM)

Note-some have cartridges for each color. Some also have more colors then the 3 (CYM)

Term
What is Dithering
Definition
Shades of each color and varying the pattern of dots as well as density can make the color appear to be more saturated or darker.
Term
Where are the print heads located and how many nozzles are there?
Definition
Print heads are located on the cartridge. There are 300 to 600 seperate nozzles.
Term
What is the DPI for Thermal and Piezoelectic printers
Definition

Thermal printers are 300 to 600 dpi but with software enhancements can be raised to 1200dpi

Piezoelectric printers print at 720 X 720dpi. Through software enhancements can print 1440x720.

Term

Term
What are basic troubleshooting for inkjets
Definition

Use ASID troubleshooting method

Aquire information about the problem

ask the user what are the symptons

check printer for error codes

print test page if possible

review w2000or xp error codes in event viewer

simplify by removing any non-critical componants

Implement by identifying problable causes and implementing potential solution.

Document the error symptons

Term
What are some of the problems with Inkjet printers
Definition

Cost of consumables-print cartdridges

Nothing prints

Poor print quality or stray lines

Paper jams

Term
What are steps if nothing prints
Definition

Verify that print job is getting to print queue

Check power to printer

Check connection to printer

Check ink cartridges

Check printer configuration

Term
What are steps for poor print quality or stray lines
Definition

make sure print heads are not clogged.

Check to see if printer is in draft mode either on printer or in windows

Stray lines means the print heads are worn, worn print guides, or the nozzles are clogged.

NOTE

Incorrect print drivers can also cause poor quality on print out.

Term

Laser Printers

What are the components of a laser printer

Definition

toner cartridge

laser scanning assembly

Power supplies

Paper control and transport assembly

Transfer corona assembly

Fusing assembly

Electronic control package

Term
What is the acronym ED and what is the ED process
Definition

ED-Electrophotographic Process

Combining electrostatic charges, toner and laser light a high quality image is produced.

Term

Diagram of laser printing process

Term
What is laser printing process step by step
Definition

The Drum is positively charged by the Charge corona wire or charge roller.

the laser draws an electrostatic image onto the photosensitive drum

After the pattern is set the positive charge toner is applied to the drum

The paper passes through the transfer corona recieving a more power negative charge pulling the toned imaged from the drum.

NOTE

To keep the paper from sticking to the drum it is discharged by the detac corona wire.

the paper passes through heated rollers called the fuser where it melts the toner onto the paper giving final results once it hits hits the paper tray.

The drum with the image passes through the discharge lamp where the entire drum is charged causing the image to dissapear then the process starts over.

Term
What is the ideal humidity level for laser printer paper
Definition

between 25% and 50%

Below 25% causes static

Above 50% causes moisture

Term
What are some of the problems with laser printers
Definition

Safety issues-Toner is toxic, Fusing rollers are very hot, Transfer coronas are high voltage due to the HVPS.

Paper Jams-Paper travels an s curve path so rollers can malfunction. Humidity levels can be high causing the paper to stick together or if the humidity is to low static is created causing paper to stick together.

If the printer seems to be fine but still not printing check communication.

Blank pages- Out of toner, HVPS is not working properly then the corona wires are not being charged. Broken corona wires.

Partial printing and smudges-Low toner, indistinct images results in faulty corona wire or roller or the HVPS. If images flake when it comes out then check the fuser assembly.

Repeating marks and stray marks-dirty rollers or scratched drum. In older lasers could be dirty corona wire. Stray marks are the result of dirt or loose toner or a damaged drum.  Wavy output is the result of bad formatter board. ghost images is the result of fault cleaning blades or the erase lamp.

Garbage prints-Driver needs to be updated. The printer uses 2 languages

1.Postscript

2.pcl

upgrading the firmware with incompatible code will cause garbage printouts.
