Cards

Term
Prazoin
Terazosin
Definition
alpha 1 blocker
Used to treat hypertension and urinary retention. Also decreases PVR
Term
Phenoxybenzamine
Definition
Irreversible alpha 1 blocker (also blocks alpha 2 a bit)
Used to treat Pheochromocytoma-tumor of adrenal medulla that causes increase release of catecholamine with higher NE:EPI ratio than normal
Term
Tamsulosin
Definition
alpha 1a blocker which relieves urinary retention assoc w/ benign prostate hypertrophy by specifically inhibiting contraction of prostate and involuntary sphincter
Term
Phentolamine
Tolazoline
Definition
block alpha 1 and alpha 2 equally
Term
Yohimbine
Definition
alpha 2 blocker...little clinical use but used to be for ED but would also raise BP and heart rate. Makes erection by blocking inhibitory alpha-2 receptor on parasympathetic ganglion
Term
Alpha 1 blocker Side effects
Definition
reflex tachycardia, postural hypotension, angina, nasal congestion, inhibit ejaculation
Term
Propranolol, Timolol, Nadolol
Definition
Beta 1 and 2 blockers
Term
Acebutolol, Betaxolol, Esmolol, Atenolol, Metoprolol
Definition
B1 blocker; cardio-specific (only does B2 blocking a little)
Treat hypertension and CHF
Term
Pindolol, Acebutolol
Definition
B1/B2 partial agonist
means acts as B-blocker when natural agonist is present, but acts as partial agonist otherwise...advantage is it avoids hypoglycemic and bradycardia effects
Term
Labetalol, Carvedilol
Definition
a and b blockers (mixed)
Term
Uses of Beta Blockers
Definition
Chronic Glaucoma (B1 blocks aqueous humor production), hypertension, CHF, reduces MI, angina pain, migraine, hyperthyroidism induced cardiac arrythmias, performance anxiety
Term
Beta Blocker Side effects
Definition
Bronchoconstricion-careful with asthmatics
Brdycardia-dont give to pts with conduction problems or acute CHF
Renin increases bc beta blockers reduce renal flow-this results in increased BP
Hypoglycemia from decreased glucagon and gluconeogenesis, careful with diabetics
Sexual impairment for men from reduced blood flow
Term
Labetalol, Carvedilol
Definition
a1 antagonist + beta 1 antagonist so decreases PVR without causing reflex tachycardia and w/o altering cardiac output
