Term
What is adaptation?
Definition
refers to the process where selective
pressures result in some genes becoming more frequent in a
population over time. Adaptations are environment specific;
genetic changes that are advantageous in some environments
might be detrimental in others.
Term
What are the different types of adaptation?
Definition
1. Physiological
2. Developmental
3. Cultural
4. Genetic
Term
What are cultural adaptations?
Definition
technological devices such as
clothing, shelter, and methods of food production. Social
systems and rules for behavior are also adaptations.
Term
What is physiological acclimatization?
Definition
adaptive physiological
response to a single stimuli or stressor. It is a short term
change; when you are no longer exposed to the stressor you
lose it (not genetic). This happens when the environmental
conditions exceed the normal limits of tolerance and a
physiological strain is put on the body. The body adjusts by
changing the internal physical and chemical environment.
Examples include shivering and sun tanning.
Term
What is developmental acclimatization?
Definition
adaptive physiological
response to a number of stressors or stimuli. It can produce
permanent physiological change for the individual because it
occurs during growth and development. For example, enlarged
hearts among high-altitude populations.
Term
What are genetic adaptations?
Definition
the product of natural selection. It is
permanent for the individual and heritable, for example, sickle
cell.
