• Recurrent (2 – 3x/week) episodes of binge-eating: eating (within a discrete period of time) an amount of food that is clearly larger than most people would eat (average 1500 - 3000 calories); accompanied by feeling of loss of control
• Recurrent compensatory behaviors (at least 2x/week):
• Purging: self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas
• Non-purging: excessive exercise or fasting
• Most individuals with BN are within 10% of their normal body weight.

• Binging occurs in the absence of inappropriate compensatory behavior
