|
Definition
The Acts were intended to strengthen the federal government. First, the Naturalization Act required that non-citizens be residents for 14 years (instead of the prior period of five years) before they became eligible for U.S. citizenship. Second, the Alien Act authorized the president to deport non-citizens deemed dangerous to the peace and safety of the U.S. Third, the Alien Enemies Act allowed wartime arrest, imprisonment, and deportation of any non-citizen resident whose home country was at war with the United States. Finally, the Sedition Act made it a crime to criticize the government by publishing false, scandalous, and malicious writing. The Sedition Act limited free speech and caused several newspaper editors to lose their jobs, including Benjamin Franklin Bache (Benjamin Franklins grandson). |
