After the fall of France, Hitler planned to invade Great Britain. Before he could, he needed to gain control of the skies. In a battle fought entirely in the skies, the Royal Air Force and Luftwaffe battled in late summer 1940. The Royal Air Force won and Germany gave up on invading Britain.

The commanding general of US forces in the Pacific. When ordered to leave the Philippines he promised that "I shall return". In late 1944 and early 1945 US forces fulfill his promise.

Translates to 'Divine Wind'. As Japan grew desperate toward the end of the war about 4000 Japanese pilots flew suicide missions against US ships, flying their plane into the ships. 40 US ships were sunk by them.

This was the strategy to defeat Japan in the Pacific. Working west toward Japan some islands were selected for capture. They required land for an airstrip and deep water for shipping. As islands were captured any Japanese behind the advance were cut off and no longer effective.

Definition
The final German offensive of the war. The attack was in the Ardennes Forest area of Belgium, France, and Luxembourg at Christmas 1944. The 101st Airbourne was surrounded, but General George Patton led the 3rd Army over 200 miles and broke through to win the battle.

Definition
June 6, 1944, the invasion of Normandy (France) by mainly US, British, and Canadian troops. The largest amphibious invasion ever. This was the attack on Western Europe that led to the recapture of Paris and the end of the war in Europe within a year.

Bataan Death March
Definition
After US and Filipino forces surrendered some 75,000 were force marched to prison camps. In tropical heat snf marching for up to a week with little food or water only 54,000 made it to the camps. Others were victims of cruelty and often random acts of violence against the prisoners.
