Definition
 Emotional display signals potential behavior
Term
o James-Lange Theory 1884
Definition
• Bodily changes create emotional state • Reflexive behaviors to dangerous situations, emotions come later
Term
o James-Lange Theory 1884
• Perception ->
Definition
bodily changes -> emotion -> behavior
Term
• Clicker: grizzly bears esape according to the james-lange theory:
Definition
 Your HR increase, causes fear, then hide
Term
• Facial feedback hypothesis
Definition
 Feeling emotion that you are presenting
• Ex: “grin and bear it”
Term
criticism to james lange theory
Definition
. Organisms still exhibit emotions without bodily sensations  3. Many organs are fairly insensitive to the environment
 4. Changes in internal organs are slow
 5. Creating arousal does not lead to an emotion
Term
Organisms still exhibit emotions without bodily sensations
Definition
• increased heart rate happens when you’re scared, angry, exercise, in love- same sensation different emotions. Physiological arousal bleeds over
• ppl w/spinal cord injuries (can’t feel physiological sensations) but can still feel emotion (clicker, evidence against James-lange theory)
Term
Changes in internal organs are slow
Definition
• almost get hit by a car, 10mins later your HR is still really fast. Breif emotions, but long lasting physiological state
Term
Creating arousal does not lead to an emotion
Definition
• i.e. injecting adrenaline= arousal but no emotions
Term
• Walter Cannon’s Emergency Theory
Definition
o Reflexive changes in the body and emotions sum to generate behavior
Term
Walter Cannon’s Emergency Theory
perception ->
Definition
perception -> bodily changes & emotions -> behavior
Term
• Walter Cannon’s Emergency Theory evidence
Definition
thalamus integrates sensory info with info from emotional areas of the brain
Term
• Stanley Schachter-
Definition
Cognitive Physiological theory of Emotion
Term
Cognitive Physiological theory of Emotion
Definition
o Need physiological and cognitive attributions are necessary for full emotion
o Logic: arousal is usually explained by the situation (cognitive label)
Term
o So what happens when unexplained arousal occurs in cognitive phsyiological theory of emotion ?
Definition
ppl feel what they attribute their physiological state to vitamin suplement study
Term
cog phys vitamin supplement experiment
Definition
• Gave ppl “vit supplement” that was actually adrenaline. HR increased. Participants didn’t feel any strong emotions. Then they did it w/ someone else in the room running around w/hula hoop and laughing- participants tried to come up with cognitive label- they cognitively created feeling happy. Then they did it with someone in the room that was angry stomping and kicking, participants reported they were angry.
Term
coffee and the cog phys theroy
Rx drugs
Definition
physiological change, not cogntively aware that you drank too much coffeeo Rx drugs- pain killers feel loopy giggly no reason
Term
• Criticism to cog-phys theory of emotion
Definition
o Cognitive attribution alone is sufficient to create emotional state (feel emotion bc of a thought not physiological change)
• Ex: start thinking about you havent done- have emotional stress response
• Ex: force yourself to cry: think about something sad
