Joints Classifications: Structural (3) and functional (3). |
|
Definition
Structural classifications: 1. Fibrous 2. Cartilagenous 3. Synovial Functional classifications: 1. Synarthrotic - immobile 2. Amphiarthrotic - semi-mobile 3. Diarthrotic - fully mobile |

Term
Joints: Fibrous (3) types |
|
Definition
Fibrous joints held by DCT between bones w/ close contact. 3 types. 1. Syndesmosis: bones of joint bound by sheet/bundle of DCT. Amphiarthrotic. 2. Suture - only between flat skull bones. Bones of joint connected by sutural ligaments. Synarthrotic 3. Gomphosis: Union of cone/peg shaped bone into it's assoc'd socket. Tooth into jaw. Synarthrotic. |

Cartilagenous Joints (2 Types) Cartilage Types |
|
Definition
Hyaline/fibrocartilage 1. Syncondrosis: Bands of hyaline connect bones of joint. Epiphyseal plates and FIRST rib/sternum joint. Synarthrotic 2. Symphysis: Fibrocartilagenous joint. Between coxa (symphysis pubis) and between vertebrae. Amphiarthrotic. |

Synovial Joints Major Components |
|
Definition
Majority of joints are synovial. Diathrotic. Components, from medial to lateral or something: 1. Articular cartilage: covers ends of joint bones where they move. Redux friction and resist wear. 2. Subcondral plate: bone below artic. cart. 3. Joint Capsule/Articular capsule Synovial Joints can be partially/completely divided by menisci. |

Synovial Joints: Joint Capsule |
|
Definition
Joint capsule contains and holds together bones of syovial joint. Outer layer: DCT; attaches to bone ends on periostium. Ligaments: inelastic, hold joints together. Inner layer: Vascular layer of LCT called synovial membrane - which is few cells thick and covers surface w/in joint. Creates synovial cavity. Some synovial membrane has villi and folds. Many also store fatty pads which aid in joint function. Synovial fluid: provides nutes to artic cart. Used sparingly. |
|
|
Term
|
Definition
Found on inner lining of synovial membrane; essentially sacs of synovial fluid. Aid in tendon movement. Also found between skin+bone prominences (olecranon process). |

Synovial Joints: Structural Types (6) |
|
Definition
1. Ball in Socket 2. Condylar/Ellipsoid: (phalynx process of metacarps). Structure not unlike lens-into-lens 3. Gliding/Plane - Flat/slight curve. Sliding movement/twisting. Allos flexing of wrist. 4. Hing - elbow, phalanges. 5. Pivot - dens/neck, proximal radius end 6. Saddle - Convex and concave joint. Looks like topographical saddle. Thumb carpal/metacarp joints. |
