Expressionism in literature manifests itself about 1910, though signs of it are perceptible in certain plays of Wedekind. The movement has some analogies to the Strum und Drang and was accompanied by a renewed interest in the works of J. M. R. Lenz and G. Büchner. Expressionism reacted against Naturalism and the effeteness of neo-Romanticism. Its aim is to show the truth within, not in psychological analysis, but by proclaiming man's aspirations, hopes, and fears. Its style, both in poetry and in drama, is exclamatory and elliptical (frequent omission of verbs and articles). |

Ansichten eines Clowns, a novel by H. Böll, published in 1963. It is told in the first person and mainly in retrospect by Hans Schnier, the son of well-to-do parents, who opts out of his middle-class environment and becomes a professional clown. He does so from disgust at the pretensions and lack of integrity of the world of his upbringing. Yet in choosing to be an outsider he also chooses solitude, for which he is not fitted, and under the stress of this situation he breaks down. The book is intended as a bitter indictment of West Germany. |

Trakl, Georg, 1887–1914, Austrian expressionist poet. Trakl's work, influenced by French impressionist poetry, reveals his disgust with imperialistic society. An absorption with sorrow and decay permeates his Gedichte [poems] (1913), the only collection published during his lifetime. A pharmacist in the German army, Trakl died from an overdose of drugs. Posthumous publications of his work include Der Herbst des Einsamen [the autumn of the lonely] (1920) and Gesang des Abgeschiedenen [song of the departed] (1933)
