Definition

1942-64: An agreement between Mexico and American to allow thousands of Mexicans to work temporarily. Mexicans called Braceros so they could be deported back after work was over. 

Program was supposed to give them fair wages and working conditions and decent housing, but since they could be deported at anytime they found it almost impossible to form unions or secure better working conditions

Definition

LBJ's response to the NEw Deal. Plan to assist the the poor, provided medicare and medicaid. created new agencies. funded education and urban development. eradicate poverty. 

 

Significance: response to prosperity not depression. Mid 60's were a time of rapid econ expansion, fueled by increased gov't spending and tax cut on individuals initially proposed by Kennedy. Civil Rights undermined the equality and affluence of American life. Vietnam War undermined the view that fighting international communism was the country's top priority.

Definition
Federally enforced voting rights amongst minorities as well as whites.

National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO)
Definition
The organization had four goals: adequate income, dignity, justice, and democratic participation. The group was active from 1966 to 1975. At its peak in 1969, NWRO membership was estimated at 25,000 members (mostly African American women). Thousands more joined in NWRO protests

The new left wing idealology separating from the old left. 

Tom hayden lead the protest movement to distinguish it. Focuses more on lonliness and alienation issues rather than labor issues.
